It is great to see the history coming out where my grandfather played a part. Only makes me more determined to do what I can to preserve his and others memories.

Would it be possible to have a really clear picture of the Devon FA medal so I can use it on the TFF pages in an upcoming programme? I may try and do a whole spread on this topic, maybe when there are two games in one week and we've got more space...
That's if it's ok with Derek to put this in a match programme?

Yes! I will get the medal in the morning again as I gave it to my youngest son , just phoned him up, I will collect it in the morning and have it on here for you before lunch time. It would be an honour for you to use it. I am awaiting another medal from my son in Holland and a few more from family members...

Deo Adjuvante Labor ProficitWith Gods help our hard work will profit(or something close!) It is the latin motto of the city of Sheffield. Sorry, I'd forgotten we had a second Latin scholar. Remembering I arrived in Sheffield as a student shortly after Albert died - to study things like economic history and industrialisation - this is proving an opportunity to revisit the history of Sheffield's steel industry. Right, Cammells - Cyclops works - later took over a Birkenhead business called Laird.... Reminds me of a fresher's coach trip around the east side of Sheffield: the Brightside & Carbrook Co-op; the parliamentary seat of Stalin's Granny (Joan Maynard); hundreds of soon-to-be-demolished houses all marked "EL OFF" (standing for "electric lights off" as opposed to a local obscenity). Let's hope we'll have something to celebrate at the Don Valley Stadium on the final day of the season! Thanks to Derek and Dave for getting all the scans sorted.

Meanwhile from Mike Holgate's Devon Derbies 1920-2001, here's something to gladden the heart (we'll not dwell upon the 1934 Div 3S Cup final defeat at Exeter in which Hutch featured): Mike's Derbies book is being updated and reprinted - I trust everyone will go out and buy it after reading Barty's little taster! I'm not sure where the 5-1 in the semi comes from - I have it down as 4-2.

The use of green in that medal takes us back to the old business of whether or not it is the Devon colour. There's also part of the Exeter coat of arms - the castle with three turrets on the red and black background - together with Semper Fidelis, the city motto. That's probably a throwback to the days of "city and county" which, in turn, meant that some county institutions were named "Devon and Exeter".

Brilliant... I shall do a really good story for one of the match programmes soon. Albert's 100th birthday would have been on September 30. We have got home games on September 25 and September 28. How about a "normal" TFF feature on the 25th and a "Hutch special" on the 28th?

Unfortunately I’ve forgotten exactly how it was shown by Messrs Gibbes and Lovis that Dennis Lewis made 443 league appearances rather than the oft-quoted 442. The online Herald Express article of April 2008 quotes John Lovis: "We have discovered three mistakes, with Dennis Lewis credited with one appearance he didn't make (in 1950), but also not given two games which he did play in.” Old e-mail retrieved: John Lovis has now completed his double-checking and we are now sure that the Centenary History has the following errors : Lewis did not play A v Southend on 30/9/50, Sammy Collins did Lewis did play H v QPR on 29/3/58, Jimmy James did not Lewis did play H v Brentford 4/4/58, Jimmy James did not Dennis Lewis's total is therefore 473 - 443 league + 30 FA Cup. The league total now ties up exactly with the figure quoted by Barry Hugman in "Football League Players' Records". If Hilly's total is 471, he therefore needs two more appearances to equal and three to beat the record.

I'm editing this post as I got the wrong end of the stick! I realise that at that point of Jon's 'old email' Hilly had actually only played the 471... I had initially read it differently. But I'll still leave the picture of the 'FA Trophy Final Wembley Ball' being the one that Kevin played with on his record-breaking and last appearance and which he kindly signed and then added his magic record breaking number, 474.

I posted a copy of the e-mail I sent to Darryl when Hilly had played 471 games, but he did go on to play another three and beat the record. Kevin Hill 474 Dennis Lewis 473 (I think! ) Of course, if it hadn't been for the War our Albert would have been so far clear that there wouldn't have been any need for a recount!

I thought we'd agreed sometime ago that saying sorry was forbidden between us!
