I have just met Derek, the grandson of pre-war United legend Albert Hutchinson, who is looking to add to his collection about his grandfather. Unfortunately at Plainmoor we don't have a team picture from this era, I am going to check at the library but if anyone can add anything or send me a copy of a programme/picture from that time it would be greatly appreciated by Albert's family including his son and I can pass it on to Derek.
Thanks
Darryl

If you want to find out where Mike Holgate got his pics, you can contact him via Torquay library. Dave Twydell sorted the pics for the Centenary History. You can contact him through here: www.yore.demon.co.uk/about.htmAlbert Hutchinson is THE outstanding TUFC player of the pre-war period. After joining us from Luton in the close season of 1930, he played 317 League and 22 Cup games scoring 80 League and 4 Cup goals up until the end of the 1938/39 season. He was also a regular during the 1939/40 season, but did not re-appear in 1945 after the club had closed down for five years. It is very possible that if the War had not intervened, Albert would have set an appearance record that would never have been beaten. He played in EIGHT different positions for us - all except goalkeeper, right back and right wing. His early games were mostly at inside left and his last ones at left back. Albert received a well-deserved benefit match played against Norwich on 27 April 1936. One remarkable feat not recorded in the record books was a hat-trick (plus a controversially disallowed goal) scored against First Division Liverpool in a friendly match in 1935. I have posted the match report here: torquayfansforum.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=tufchistory&thread=5883&page=1Finally, I note that the Centenary History is missing Albert's date of birth. Could you find that out for me, Darryl?

Thanks for the date of birth, Derek.
So, Albert was still only nineteen when he arrived at Torquay and was only twenty-eight when his career was cut short by the outbreak of the war.
You can never be sure what would have happened if things had turned out differently, but it is odds-on that he would hold the club's all-time appearance record if the war had not come along.
Please be sure to tell your father (if he doesn't already know) that his father really was a Torquay United legend - and that is not a term I throw about lightly.
If you come across any more bits or pieces about Albert's time in Torquay, please share them with us.

Hi Jon, Another bit of history. Talking to my father this morning he told me that his god father was leslie Lievesley who as you will know played with Torquay United with my grandfather during the 30's. Lievesley went on to coach Torino A.C. F.C. where he lost his life in the plane disaster below. The Superga air disaster took place on Wednesday, 4 May 1949, when a plane carrying almost the entire Torino A.C. football squad, popularly known as Il Grande Torino, crashed into the hill of Superga near Turin killing all 31 aboard including 18 players, club officials, journalists accompanying the team, and the plane's crew. The team was returning from a farewell match for Xico Ferreira against Benfica in Lisbon. I will try put up some newspaper clippings of Albert when he visited Manchester city etc and get some photo's taken of the medals earned in those days.

Thanks Jon Just looking through what I have so far about Albert, Did you know that he did play in goal after taking over from an injured Percy Maggs during a home game against Brighton where he saved a penalty ? Here's a clipping from one of his visits back to the club. Frank Evans was the Licencee of the Union Hotel now known as the Union Inn. I am busy trying to clean up a newspaper article that has the Brighton game mentioned and will post if I get it clear enough.

Derek suggests that Hutchinson moved back to his native Sheffield and records show that J.A. Hutchinson made various war-time appearances for Shefield United starting with one in the 1939-40 season; three in 1944-45 and ten in 1945-46 when he scored nine goals.
Is this possibly the same player and the records have his initials wrong (unlikely) or are they related in some way??

How about the likelihood of Albert playing in wartime football for Chesterfield, Mansfield, Barnsley, Rotherham or Doncaster? My Jack Rollin book has long gone.

(I'm going to modify this as I don't think it can be correct. According to the history books United only played three league games before abandonement, although this may relate to the re-arranged league set up for local teams)
Well that was interesting...
Albert played twenty-nine times for Torquay United during the ill-fated 1939/40 season scoring three goals.
There is no record of Albert playing for the Northern wartime teams mentioned by Barton above but interestingly the godfather of Albert's son did...
Leslie Lievesely... In season 1940/41 he turned out five times guesting for Doncaster Rovers and again three times in 1941/42 before playing two games the following season for Mansfield Town.
