Interesting to see how the fortunes of the 24 clubs have fluctuated in the nearly 40 years since. 3 are in the present Premiership, 3 others have been in the Premiership and others in the old First Division, and 4 are no longer Football League clubs. We along with others have been out of the league and back again, and our promotion this seen will see us back where we were in 1971 when Villa came to town ;D

Two things:
1. Which Torquay United personalities - managers or players; past or future - can you spot amongst the other teams?
2. Can anyone post a copy of the songsheet for the Dick Edwards song? My memory is that the original included the words "We're right behind you Torquay when the Villa come to town" in anticipation of Villa's FA Cup visit in November 1970. I'm certain the Torquay Times published a songsheet - a fold-over sheet of A4 - on the day before the game. I thought I'd kept one but sadly not. Memory also tells me that some of the words were changed for the disc that followed (as previously pictured by Dave on this site): eg "when the opponents come to town" and references to promotion "up into Division Two" rather than cup progress into round two.

On this site Barton there is an answer to part of your question www.peterice.com/ralabel.htmSingle: RA 5003 DICK EDWARDS TORQUAY UNITED'S WAR CRY b/w AROUND YOU Plain sleeve Side 1 is "We Shall Not Be Moved" adapted by United's player Dick (see LP for further info), into a song praising Torquay United Football Team, and includes the lyrics "we're going to Division Two". With piano and rhythm accompaniment, there is a vocal chorus that could possibly be some other team members? However, sorry to report that the optimists were relegated to Division Four at the end of the 1971/ 72 season! Side 2 has the same musicians accompanying Dick with one of his own songs. Recorded 1971 * Issued 1971 I think the first verse went something like this oh united the best team in the land oh united we've really got things planned we got the luck we got the skil and we can see it thru on to division two

That's the other thing! It was - of course - the tune of "We shall not be moved" but I'm sure the Torquay Times songsheet mistakenly said "We shall overcome" (far too mournful for Dick I would have thought).

Frank Prince is in the back row of the Bristol Rovers photo. Is that 'Lindsay Parsons' . I don't remember him having long hair but this photo would have been taken long before his Plainmoor days ? And what about Impey. Did he have a son called John?

And what about Impey. Did he have a son called John?I think that's Alan Impey who was to play in Minehead's outstanding team of the mid 1970s which - believe it or not - was one of the best outside the Football League.
