What a magnificent beast! I think steam locos are things of great character and beauty, railway and mass transit systems fascinate me and I'll let you into a little secret................ I've got a sizeable collection of locos that are sadly in "mothballs" due to Bijou's abhorance of "clutter" and love of minimalism. Hence the collection that ~ had I my way, would adorn my living room on shelves around the walls; having to lay in a a cupboard, boxed up; out of sight and seemingly destined for nothing better until one of my sons shows an interest in them one day....................so far Anthony shows none and thinks I'm an absolute barn pot At least I've managed to get her to ride the Dart Valley and Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch lines with me although so far she's shown little enthusiasm for my reminiscences of the old branch up to Moreton & the Teign Valley route to Exeter of my youth!

Did anyone see the remake of the 39 Steps last night? If so was the train in which Richard Hannay escaped from the Tornado?

As for train spotting I used spend my summer holidays (early 60s) at my grans in Gateshead and go down to the engine sheds there. I have cabbed or spotted all the A4 pacifics amongst others and riddden on the mallard footplate from Newcastle to the sheds over the High level bridge

Absolutely agree, I've programmed my Sky+ to record every one of them and have hugely enjoyed the series so far. I drove someone who was travelling by train to Swindon yesterday and we got talking about this very series as it had featured Swindon the night before. She told me she was a friend of the Portillos and what a lovley guy he was. I haven't any time for his Thatcherite politics, but must say he is a very good TV presenter.

Agree about Portillo. Felt like throwing rotten eggs when he came to open a bridge near my work when he was a Tory minister. You can't argue with his presenting skills and personality though. Watched that programme about Guantanamo and it really changed my mind about him. Can't say I'm bothered about trains though. (so why an earth am I wasting all your time writing on this thread!? Must get out more.

Yes,absolutely brilliant. Have to say my favorite part of the programme was the aerial view of Sharpham. This is where I spent the happiest days of my life and brought back memories of my childhood. If anybodies recorded it I lived in the old coach house which you can see to the left of Sharpham House. If my Dad had not been diagnosed with MS,I might well of been still living there and may not of been the TUFC supporter I am now.

Cheers Andy.
I firmly believe that the rise in crime can be directly linked to the down turn in Train Spotting and Wargaming (not the Warhammer stuff, but Airfix and Miniature Figurines).
There was nothing finer than popping into Mansells Model shop with 1/2 crown and then going down to the Railway Station to put some numbers in the old 'Train Spotting' book.
Ah...the good old days.

I think train spotting was a good hobby when you were young, kind of something to do before girls and beer (I'm not saying they are linked).
It was a great day out and kept us out of trouble - I'm sure if more kids went train spotting it would keep the crime rates down.
As Winston Churchill once said:
"If you don't like Train Spotting, you can stick it up your hairy bum crack".
Train Spotting thread now back on track................

www.greatwestern.org.uk/d1000m_in.htmI often wondered why after only 15 years service most were cut up but I now know why. Dodgy windscreen wipers and cracks in the fuel pumps not hairy bum crack syndrome.
