I provided the post-match entertainment by making an extremely large plateful of assorted meats disappear - a trick I had practised on an appreciative audience of one at Shrewsbury and so felt ready to perform to a wider public. It was a work of art to see Jon demolish a huge plate of meat. Each mouthful was planned, surprised he left a bone on the plate though. Most of the meat is hidden by the fried egg and sausages.

I'm glad a wider audience was treated to the spectacle although, from the angle of the photograph, it appears to have been a relatively modest serving compared to Montgomery's Tower in Shrewsbury. Not much culinary excess to report from me. After the match I lingered for a coffee with friends at the KFC at the White City and I'm sure I've seen some of the more youthful members of the queue play for our reserve team this season. Then I wandered over for a snack from one of the shops at Salford Quays from where I could hear the Red Shite sing their songs across the water in the Mark Platts or whatever that pub was called. It struck me that the Man United supporters we encountered seemed to ignore us as if we were insignificant pondlife. Later we were in town - which was rather lively following the "other game" - where the song of the evening was that Nick Nack Paddy Wack ditty. At least, for me, it stirred happy memories of the alternative 1980s version which varied between mention of Bryan Robson's knee and a transferable disease. Foodwise, chicken and chips at Leo's on Oldham Street was adequate even though it was probably only half of the quantity of the meal featured on this thread. The following morning, after a reasonable stab at a Holiday Inn Express "buffet breakfast" (a chance to mix the old Continental style with eggs and sausage), we managed a quick detour via Maine Road, Eastlands and the Butcher's Arms, Droylsden before heading home. Certainly the last of these venues reminded us of from where we have come these last two years. It also provided a memory of Danny Stevens’ reply to my mate’s enquiry as to his wellbeing the night we played at Droylsden. If I recall correctly it was along the lines of “Not playing. I’ve done my facking knee..."

It's no wonder everybody sounds depressed eating all that disgracefully unhealthy food!
We finished one third of the way down the league with a below average points return for qualifying for the play-offs so were lucky to get the chance of snatching a promotion place. The positive side is that I am sure many enjoyed the chance to visit Old Trafford and some to spend the evening in Manchester when the second team of the city were competing in the European Champions Final.
Stevenage were better organised and clearly had not only a Plan B but also a Plan C and Plan D. Very much like the Crawley debacle and it is so frustrating seeing everything falling apart and nothing positive being done to change it.
My big worry is that when a manager goes not only do they take some players they also often take a good number of the backroom staff.
I shall miss Aussie! ;D

Just trying to lighten the mood Aussie! The new fixtures are out on 17 June (less than 3 weeks) so I want everybody on here cheered up by then so I can be optimistically looking forward to next season (otherwise my doctor will have me back on the pills again!). Our odds at the moment for promotion are 16/1 (same as Argyle). A quid on us would be money well spent. How about Karen Brady as manager? May have no relevant experience for the 1st team but would be a talking point and great gimmick to attract larger crowds, and she should be good with our 'apprentice' trainees as she does have experience in that area in sorting the wheat from the chaff! On a more serious note when our grandstand is demolished and that side of the ground is a building site:- (a) Where are the players and officials going to get changed?; and (b) Where is Mr Meerkat going to sit? ;D

There is a massive amount of room under the Popside, the players would run out onto pitch beneath the police viewing box. Where Mr.Meerkat sits is anyones guess at the moment, the further away from the manager the better I would have thought!

Just got round to watching the FL show. Anyone else think that was a pretty obvious handball from Branners first attempted shot near the end? (apologies if already mentioned somewhere)...

Just seen the Stevenage goal... what a cracker. Missed it at Old Trafford as I was otherwise engaged in the 'Gents'. Disgraceful. Too many Chardonnays and not enough prawn sandwiches to soak them up? ;D

Players and managers comments all seem to refer to a lack of water on O.T. and there people were questioning us for watering our pitch! Just read this in the old Herald Excuse ...... about the dryness of the pitch ... having an effect on our passing game ...... This is tosh of the highest order Yesterday I watched The League 1 final on that very same "dry" pitch ....... and both teams had no problem knocking the ball about very effectively ....... But what I did notice .... on Saturday was that nobody was slipping and sliding about ..... like they do at Plainmoor most Saturdays ........ Now I am no way criticizing our hallowed turf ... which is in superb condition .... in fact if I see Scotty on Match Day I always congratulate him on the surface ...... I just believe that this watering of the pitch to within an inch of its life minutes before KO is not the way to go ........ This thing of .....we cant pass effectively ... unless the pitch is wet. Is urban myth ... and Bucks propaganda Rovers ... get ready for your water bill to shoot through the roof ...

I remember an interview with Teddy Sheringham after an England game at OT. he was asked why england had not passed or controlled the ball well. He replied that the pitch was too dry and that when manure play they water the pitch before the game but didn't for England. I witnessed this watering before the gaem when I went there but it was with sprinklers and not water cannons!! I am in favour of watering the pitch to stop the ball bouncing too high but it should be done hours before and not minutes. we came close to resembling the Baseball Ground of the 70s at times this season

I now feel capable of posting comments on the OT experience without offending anyone. Its taken 24 hrs but now the doom is lifting. So to Sat 28 May The highs: 1. Has to be entering Sam platts. We got there about 12 and walked towards the pub behind a group of Man U fans. The doorman stopped them and said "sorry you can`t come in, this is a Torquay United pub". The look on their faces was priceless. Well worth the journey alone. 2. Getting home at 10pm without any major road issues, unlike the poor souls who had an horrendous journey up. The lows: 1. My grandadad used to tell me tales of a Dartmoor prisoner they nicknamed "rubber bones" because of his knack of fitting into small places. I reckon he must have helped install the seats at OT. I had to develop a contorted seating position to fit my knee caps under the lip of the seat in front. Others nearbye had developed a side saddleesque approach almost to the point of looking at the game through one eye. maybe not such a bad thing as presumably they only saw half the tosh being served up. 2. The services on the way home- stopped off for a quiet KFC all was nice and quiet just what we needed in our depessive gloom. We did the self service order, then to our horror whilst we waited for our food, the place filled with happy kids bedecked in red scarves. We were surrounded. Luckily, in disgust we had thrown our colours in the back of the car before leaving OT. Clutching our bag of chicken strips we sloped off to eat in stunned silence in the car park. 3. I seem to recall a film where a road sign displayed messages to this chap that no one else could see. I think we may have been unwitting extras in the remake filmed on the A14. In the failing light it seemed all the electronic signs appeared extra bright and gleefuly reported that J9 for Stevenage was only a few miles away. 4. I think I may be suffering from concusion or a loss of memory. I can recall climbing the steps at Ot and finding my seat at about 3pm but then I can`t recall anything happening until about 5.30pm when I found myself in the car park. I`m slightly concerned because I think I`ve had similar experiences before. Milber
