After a good pre-season that maybe six weeks ago, few would have predicted, the serious stuff starts against Burton, the side that got promoted with us two years ago. After a relatively good debut season in the league, Burton fell away last year but that was in part to a massive fixture backlog that saw them drawn into the relegation dogfight and reflected rather harshly on their squad.
Until last week, Burton had a quite pre season on the transfer front front, just re-signing winger Cleveland Taylor after a year away in the SPL and midfielder Chris Palmer from Gillingham. However, a flurry of activity has seen them sign Goalie Atkins from Derby on a season long loan, Defender Tom Parkes on a six month loan from Leicester, Left Back Danny Blanchett from Crewe and perhaps most importantly Justin Richards from Port Vale. Also not forgetting Zola from Crewe in the January transfer window.
In their final pre season game, they drew 1-1 with Telford and all of the above started in this match and most will probably feature at some stage against us on Saturday. However, it is worth pointing out that although they all have experience at this level, I don't think that any transfer fees were involved. It may also be a good time to play them as the recent signings will not have had much chance to gel together and get use to a certain style of play.
As for Torquay, it looks like everyone will be fit apart from Leadbitter but for once we look really well covered at right back with Oastler. I think the Truro match will have a very similar line up to the team that walks out against Burton with maybe just Kee getting the nod up front. Hopefully we can translate our recent form into league 2 results and with a very tough start to the season, a confidence boosting home win is much needed.
It will be very strange with the grandstand side of the ground empty and I am sure that with a new manager and many new players that the two remaining home sides will be pretty much packed out and the advice is to get the family stand tickets before the match day although updates on this situation will be given on dot com.
