The anticipation has been building all day .... One of the most fabulous times of the year is here again .....The fixture Poster is up at work and I've just put me Accumulator on in William Hills.......Yes folks ....It's the beginning of a new season Now of late I have been frequenting The Rec on saturday afternoons and enjoying some superb Cricket laid on from Torquay ... They are flying high and remain unbeaten with only a few weeks of the season to go .... by the way the welcome from down there is very warm and the peeps are a very nice bunch to spend a summers afternoon amongst But tomorrow I shall be at our beloved Plainmoor ......... at 10 past 2 I shall get me ticket from the lovely Davina ( the girl with the squiggly hair ) in Reception and into Gulls Nest to enjoy a chinwag with whoever is about, I have met some smashing peeps in their over the past couple of years ... it really is an asset to the club, I shall buy my 50-50 ticket from the usual lady as I always do ( Mmm that last line reminds me of a classic old Blancmange tune from back in the day ) They will be showing a match in there and by coincidence it will be Wimbledon V Rovers a nice chance to see how The Arrogant One gets on eh ....... but actually not interested in the guy anymore ..... I think we are far better equipped with Ling and Taylor at the helm Will have to leave a bit early so as to avoid wot happened two weeks ago where I was not allowed entry into The Pop from The Family Stand and had to exit back up through The Nest and re-enter thru the turnstiles on Marnham rd ...... no grumbles tho just one of those things eh I shall find some friendly faces on The Pop ie Drakey and maybe Greg and also see a few of the displaced Enclosure mob .... and then enjoy the reinstated Torquay tune ie Children by Robert Myles and then also the reinstated abanda by Herp Alpert as the boys run out ........ I think we have Mr Candy to thank for that Hoping for a lovely afternoon of Summer Footie and if ... as Meerkat suggests we lose 0-3 .... I shall eat one of Aussies Pies I shall leave you with two Youtube links to peruse if you like ... The first is Ron Manager with a lovely tribute to Saturday afternoons and the second is Robert Myles ..... Enjoy Up The Gulls See you tomorrow

Well Mr Meerkat has confidently predicted a 0-3 defeat (a la Rotherham opening day 1974) probably in a fit of pique after discovering that his beloved grandstand has closed. Strangely I know he would be delighted if that scoreline were reversed.
I haven't seen any of the PSF's but have been encouraged by both press and forum reports so am looking forward to a day clutching my TQ1 closely so that I can identify every one.
I have managed to secure a chauffeur to drop me in the vicinity of Plainmoor two to three hours before the game and pick me up after, so will be able to sample the fine ales and pasties beforehand in Boots & Laces and The Gulls Nest.
Having not seen our new players yet I do not want to be over optimistic, so on this opening day I will temper my prediction and go for Torquay United 4 Burton Albion 0 ;D

After a cloudy start the sun has come out to shine on Torquay and looks like it will be a good day for football with Aussie having to do his half time water trick! If the team play like they did against Exeter, the score may be closer to Stefano's prediction but I would take an aggregate 4-3 scoreline!

Well it looked like my prediction might be coming true at one stage, but sounded exciting apart from that knobhead Ross Reid on the radio, and a good turn out. Had a great day up here. First of all I think a word of congratulation should go to Mr Buckle after his excellent first day victory at Afc Wimbledon. Was quite amazed to look at the odd's on betfair to be 2.2 Wimbledon and 3.85 BR. Looking at the class squad that Mr Buckle has assembled the odds looked skewed to me so a quick ton laying Wimbledon to a liability of £122 and twenty minutes later was out the game backing Wimbledon for £9.3 @ odds of 21 for a nice £88 profit acorss all outcomes. Wimbledon were flattered by the 2-3 scoreline - really Mr Buckle has achieved something special there and I feel taht i ought to doff my cap to him. I don't like to be rude but is it just me or does Martin Ling look and sound like he isn't really all there. That and being assisted by Frankensteins monster - this pair actual make Buckle look like a brain surgeon - no mean feat in itself.

An impressive comeback from the Gulls to draw 2-2 that looked very unlikely when trailing 2-0. Jolly scenes at the end from the crowd and Torquay ended up looking the likeliest winners against 10 man Burton. But it was really worrying the way Burton frequently carved Torquay's defence open and for much of the match Torquay did not seriously threaten. At 2-0 down we looked to be in for a long, hard season and I am still unsure how this season will pan out.
There were some plus points however. Sponsors MOTM, our new keeper Olejnik looks outstanding and came to Torquay's rescue a few times saving 1-on-1's and his distribution is also excellent. As the man behind me reckons, he's looks the best keeper we've had since Big Nev! In Rene Howe we look to have a decent centre forward. Big, strong, puts himself about with some neat skill as well. He took his goal today with calm ease rounding their keeper. Oastler showed how well he can play at right back within the first 5 minutes on a rampaging run down the right and shot that their keeper did well to tip over. I liked the look of Atieno when he replaced Kee in the second half in attack. He looks a little like Zebrowski and showed some good flair on the ball. Perhaps he will complement Howe better than Kee.
Torquay started the match confidently and at times played some decent passing moves. But as the half wore on Torquay could not find a way to threaten. Our wingers Morris (left) and Stevens (right) were the main culprits giving the ball away cheaply when in possession. Burton were then making the clearer chances and looked sure to score when 1-on-1 with Olejnik but his reactions were superb pulling off a couple superb saves. Burton finished the half the stronger and the warning signs were there.
Burton took the lead in the 49th. minute from another 1-on-1. But worse was to follow 5 minutes later. Again Burton got behind our defence on the left, pulled the ball across that got deflected off Oastler and finally was finished off at close range. At this stage Burton were running the Torquay defence ragged and we were offering very little. Just when Ling was about to make a couple of substitutions, Howe pulled one back on 59 minutes. A through ball put him through, Howe dummied the keeper and rolled the ball into the net. Torquay now had a lifeline but we had to thank Olejnik again for keeping the score at 2-1. Macklin replaced Morris who went to the right wing with Danny going to the left wing. Atieno replaced Kee who failed to get the ball on target after chipping the keeper.
Torquay's equaliser on 81 minutes was a real delight. O'Kane about 30 yards out threaded an inch perfect pass on the deck and Mansell timed his run perfectly and steered the ball past their keeper from about 10 yards. 2-2 and there was more drama to follow. Torquay were playing well and Howe was putting himself about as Burton were now hanging on. Another delibrate foul to prevent Howe through on goal meant a second yellow card for a Burton defender who were reduced to 10 men.
After 5 minutes of added time Torquay could not find the winner. So Torquay got themselves out of jail impressively. I have my doubts how well we can do this season and as usual I just hope we can keep well clear of a relegation battle. But that defence needs to tighten up first!
It was rather strange today with an empty grandstand and Torquay fans squashed into 2 sides of the ground. I was disappointed to see that seats I wanted and was told were taken for season ticket holders were in fact vacant. If I knew that I would have brought a couple of season tickets in the early bird scheme. It's quite a performance for non-season ticket holders to sit in the Family stand. Today I brought 2 tickets for today's match at mid-day and I noticed there was a big queue at our new ticket office about 2.30pm. Crowd today 3,142, 379 from Burton.

I don't really know where to start with this tipsy turvy opener. Thought we started of the game with purpose and looked OK in patches. Midway through the half Burton stated to get into their stride with Zola and Richards pulling our defence all over the place and but for Olejnik we could easily been a goal or two down at the break. Our knew central pairing of Robertson and Saah were looking a bit shaky at times Saah particularly so he looks to lightweight for a central defender and doesn't have the power and know how of the departed Branston. Robertson was doing most of the covering back and kept Zola pretty well shackled for the most part. Joe Oastler is still learning his part but gets forward well and was the instigator of one of our best moves in the opening period when he finished a slick move with an angled shot that their goalie tipped over the bar. The second period and we needed to step up a gear but it went disastrously wrong when more indecision in defence from a long ball was chased down by Richards who was attended by last defender Oastler . Richards was far to strong and fired past Olejenik for the Burton opener. A Few minutes later and it looked like we were dead and buried with some more joke defending allowed Richards to once again nod home over the advancing Olejnik. In all honesty I thought that would be it but true to form we showed plenty of our fighting spirit epitomised by one of our genuine talents Eunan O'kane and the very lively Danny Stevens. Howes finish for our first was classy dummying to shoot before rounding the advancing keeper and side footing home. The equaliser a rare goal from Mansell was another quick incisive, to feet move created by Stevens and O'kane. We could have gone on to win it but in all honesty it would have been an injustice to Burton who will travel home believing they should have won at a canter. So what is the verdict then? it more or less turned out exactly as I thought it would. No Branston and no Zebroski who performed the role of two players for us on many occasions. Anybody who tells you they wont be missed are kidding themselves. They in my eyes were the biggest "miss". Olejnik on the other hand is class, great hands, distribution and kicks very well. Also a good shot stopper - he had to be today. Howe also has some real class about him and is tough for defenders to get at he is also surprisingly quick for a big guy and took his goal very well. Morris was a real disappointment for me today but I say today only because I believe he will come good and do a good job for us, today it just didn't happen for him. My other fear is that if we lose Eunan in the middle we have nothing creative in reserve and at times today he looked as if he could have done with a Craig Stanley type to help and support him. Mans did ok but only ok. For me Billy Kee looks sharper than ever and is relishing playing alongside a big target man worked hard and was unlucky not to score after a flowing move with a delightful first time shot that narrowly went wide of the target. Danny has been given his chance and had an excellent match on the whole. Quick feet and pace saw him lose his marker and create on numerous occasions then believe it or not he let a pass go astray and yes you guessed it the f*cking morons who are ready with their knives got on his case again. All in all good entertainment for an opener but some with tough encounters on the horizon we need to be a bit more resiliant and tighter at the back or we will undoubtedly pay the price.

Another excellent match report Swangull which has saved me one heck of a lot of typing! It was certainly a mixed bag today with some good and some bad but ultimately we showed a lot of character to come back from 0-2 and could even have nicked it. We started the match the better side with Oastler doing well to force an early save. However, the match balance slowly tilted the other way as passes went astray and yes, with very little effect from the wings and Burton were the team with the initiative as the half wore on. Palmer did well on the left wing and Richards was a threat. I thought Robertson was very good at the back but Saah had a quiet game. Olejnik looks a class act making some very good saves, with good distribution and the only thing he doesn't have is that bit of extra height. Again, the second half started tentatively and after a erroneous penalty shout for handball, the ball was hoofed long for Richards to run on to and score. The second goal followed very shortly after with the Burton attacker getting clear away in the pop-side corner and the resultant cross seemed to be headed in off the post. At this stage, with the brown stuff hitting the fan, Atieno and Macklin were being warmed up and about to come on, probably for Kee and Danny when Howe received a good ball in the area and coolly sent the keeper the wrong way before stroking the ball into the empty net. So, Ling kept the same side on for a bit longer and Danny came to life with lots of running as now Burton were rattled, causing them lots of problems although on occasion he retreated and passed back to Oastler when more attacking options were on. Macklin then came on for a poor Morris and then after, Atieno for a tiring Kee after he had just chipped wide to perform that running onto and chasing down role that Zebroski performed so admirably and on today's evidence would make a better starting partner for Howe. A good pass again into the penalty area was slotted pass the keeper by the tireless Mansell. By this stage, with the game opening up, we looked the better balanced side and could have sneaked it, particularly when Howe was sent through again which resulted in a second yellow card for their defender. Right at the end O'Kane was narrowly off side when a simple cross was on for Atieno to slot home. A precious point on the board and unlike last year, a number of players need to gel or Ling has to find the optimium combinations for us to play to a higher standard consistently throughout the match.

First match of the season and the chance to run the rule over the team in a real match. Two differing reports above so just the salient points from me. Bobby looks an excellent keeper, good as Bevs on the saving side with better distribution and much more mobile. Defence-JO looked a bit shakey at times, Robbo was usual solid self coming up with important blocks in the 1st half. Saah hopefully just needs a couple of games to get back up to league speed, either that or Ellis will be replacing him soon. Nico usual performance though done for pace a couple of times. Centre midfield looks promising, O'Kane looks to be an excellent playmaker and doesnt shirk the ball winning side of things either, Mansell was the usual box to box and breaking up the opposition, took his goal well. Morris im a bit unsure of. He doesnt look to have enough pace to beat people on the wing. Perhaps needs a bit more match fitness. Stevens for me was the same as the last two seasons. Flatters to deceive, looking good at times but poor final product and lack of assistance for JO which probably explains why Joe had a bit of a torrid time. That still doesnt deserve the abuse from certain sections, get behind the guy FFS and give him some encouragement!!! Up front Renee and Kee sounds promising but had little chance to shine as the delivery wasnt there most of the game. Renee took his goal really well, selling the keeper a dummy totally and slotting into the empty net with composure. He could well be our prize asset this season and looks a handful for anyone. Jury still out on Billy but he improved last season with real games under his belt. Subs- Were coming on just before we pulled the first one back which delayed it a bit. Macklin- Jury's still undecided but I though we looked better balanced when he came on and Danny moved to the left. The ball was hit towards him 4 times that I counted, 1 well short and cut out, 1 too long and out for a throw, one to his feet and he shot down the wing and got a venemous cross to the 6 yard box but it got cleared, 1 was a bit of a hospital pass he put back to centre midfield but it got intercepted. One thing he does offer is speed and ability to beat the defender and get crosses in, something lacking until his arrival (also stronger in tracking back). Stevens then had his best spell of the game on the left side looking the part. Perhaps he should be starting there? TA looks to be another Zebs, a handfull for defenders with twisty turny stuff and deceptive speed. Should have left one attempt for O'Kane though who was better positioned to finish. Burton did start to struggle once we pulled one back and resorted to cynical fouls when we looked threatening. Ref was onto it straight away though and I though his officiating was the best for some time at Plainmoor. (Edit: Forgot the handball shout To be fair to him it was from close range and the defender probably couldnt do much to avoid it from my position. Still seen them given though). Another handful of games will show our true colours though...

Ope to chat again soon x Thank you Lou and I hope that today's threads will calm down a bit as I don't regard the club I have supported and been lucky enough to play for in a very minor capacity to be a joke. Sure as a club they don't get everything right but we are in League 2 and we have got limited resources. I too was disappointed having bought TQ1 which I thought was an excellent read to get to the back page and find no TFF section. I went back through again to check if I had missed something. But no, nothing. I expect Kingfisher printers though in these times of recession are more annoyed after several years of printing our programme to no longer have that contract. It was nice to see Mr Chelston and Mr Budleigh before the game briefly and then to have a chat with Aussie and Louise in the Gulls Nest. At one time I thought that Mr Meerkat was Nostradumus when we went 2-0 down early in the second half. However as it turned out the only prediction he got right was that it was packed on the North Devon Link Road with holiday traffic. Our first goal was sublime. I am not sure the last time I saw such a composed finish from a Torquay United player. Rene Howe was Jimmy Greaves. Even Robin Stubbs would have been likely to blast it against the keeper's legs or over the bar. Howe ... the new Pele! After that the equaliser was inevitable and we should have gone on to win it but it matters not now. Water under the bridge, a point gained, lessons learnt between our players playing competitively together for the first time, and everything to play for until May. An enjoyable day, and of course my 4-0 win prediction was far more accurate than Mr Meerkat's 0-3 defeat prediction in that I got the number of goals scored right and I was the only one who said that we wouldn't lose!!

Thanks to everyone for their match reports, it's always good when so far from home to get a view from people who were there and make an effort to write some real good reports for those who weren't able to get to the game.
Just to let you know your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Sounds like we missed a mixed game, but with 4 goals, a sending off, a couple of well taken goals, a few good saves, but exciting none the less.

Thank you Lou and I hope that today's threads will calm down a bit as I don't regard the club I have supported and been lucky enough to play for in a very minor capacity to be a joke. Well said, Stefano. I’ll add my name to that. I also enjoyed the new-look programme and would emphasise that it is totally different to the old in just about every way imaginable: style, typeface, content, graphics, even a magazine-style spine. Upbeat and visually excellent, it’s a product of its’ time and probably more a magazine for the younger supporter than a programme for the middle-aged. It may not be entirely "me" (as an old git) but, as somebody who has written information-based publications in the past, I can only say you must go with the flow. Clearly a big project for Tim Herbert and he deserves much praise. I’m sure it would impress those on this forum who have an eye for image and branding.

Rich, the game certainly came to life for the last half an hour but after watching the Exeter match the first part of the match was disappointing, particularly in terms of the passing but hey, it was the first competitive match with lots of new players and only Nicholson, Robertson and O'Kane played in the same position as at Old Trafford. Obviously early days yet but my initial gut feeling that Macklin and LRT should have started wasn't changed yesterday. Danny, came good at the hour mark but that was only when the game opened up and I think this is the period that suits him. I also think that we would have been stronger defensively with LRT playing and with Burton having 10 attempts on target, this needs to be looked at. Thank you Lou and I hope that today's threads will calm down a bit as I don't regard the club I have supported and been lucky enough to play for in a very minor capacity to be a joke. Well said, Stefano. I’ll add my name to that. I also enjoyed the new-look programme and would emphasise that it is totally different to the old in just about every way imaginable I must admit that my heart did sink a bit when I saw the queue but with an away local Derby with added spice next Saturday, plus another away match on Saturday and maybe even family stand tickets still on sale here, I hope this was a one off but nevertheless should continue to be monitored. One solution, if this persists would be to have a separate queue for match day tickets on that day so people don't lose their drinking time etc. I can understand Dave's frustrations at what is still a difficult time for him but also don't agree with his thread title. As he admitted, he didn't fully comprehend the impact of the well publicised changes and along with the club got caught out. I think steps are being taken to improve the match day experience and what happened yesterday feels like teething problems that do need to be ironed out!

For those of you without gulls player, there are eight minutes of post match interview time with Ling and then Howe on the Radio Devon website on their extra time feature. Starts just after the thirty eight and a half minute point on their programme. I would fully agree with Ling's post match analysis. Meerkat! There are probably quite a few people from the south-east that think someone with a Devon yokel accent is stupid! Surely you weren't suggesting the reverse?
