There's also a place that looks suspiciously like Cornwall. Or is it Brixham? Not much difference in my book anyway.

I think this jam/cream debate is something of a recent invention just to stir up the Devon/Cornwall rivalry now that county rugby has gone down the pan. I'm not opposed to Chelston's tastes on the basis of it being the Cornish way. It's just wrong. But, hey, offer me a cream tea either way and I'm not complaining.

Ah, yes, Wildebeeste, a pleasant cuppa in the evening sunlight at Longshaw today. Just the right side of the county line?

Agree about the butter - there's no place for butter with cream and jam.

Yes agree with "scone" rather than "scon" (whoever heard of anyone chucking stons?)

That's because the dollop of jam needs to be skillfully placed on top of the cream (an art all true Devonians have mastered).

The Cornish and other outsiders uncouthly spread their jam on the scone with a knife (easier for the beginner, but with far inferior results).

A hornet's nest has obviously been stirred up here and since it's a private argument I shall keep out of it, but I am very pleased to read that the good folk of South Devon, just like we do in Derbyshire, pronounce the word "scone" as it is spelled instead of saying "scon" which is just ridiculous.

The picture that Barton Downs was worried about was taken from on board the Torquay/Brixham ferry; astonishingly good value at £1 each way. We sailed over, climbed the steps at the harbour, took the butterfly pictures, wandered over to Berry Head and had a bun at the cafe, then back over to Torquay and an afternoon sunbathing at Meadfoot.

Now that's how to spend a Friday instead of going to work.
