Loved to see how many Torquay fans we keen to point out the phantom whistler!

You may be right James. We might not get promoted. But nor will another nineteen teams in this division. I don't necessarily see promotion alone as the yardstick. It is not my yardstick either. But it is Ling's. He is the one that has said the target his promotion. I think he's living on cloud cuckoo land I know nothing of physiotherapy nor of Damien Davey's abilities. We're told he is good at his job and I've absolutely no reason to doubt this. But his job title is "physiotherapist" rather than "miracle worker". If he helps a player regain his fitness as quickly as other physios in this division, that's good enough for me. If he does it more quickly and more competently - if that's even measurable - that's brilliant. But I don't expect him to prevent accidental injuries or produce miracle cures like a rabbit out of the hat. Nor, of course, instantly rectify long-standing injuries in players we sign. Every player is a risk and a gamble; some more than others. If Damien Davey has the professional expertise to reduce a risk in a player from, say, 50% to 40% - if it even works like that - then it's up to the manager to decide if that's a risk worth taking. Indeed I would imagine it's those little percentage points that defines a physio's worth. My point isn't about how good Davey may or may not be. It's about the idea that we can afford to have a small squad because we won't have injuries because he's a good physio, which is clearly bunk. Recovery times may be faster but good physios cannot stop injuries occurring in the first place I've consistently maintained that I don't believe our squad is good enough or deep enough to get promoted. One of the arguments against that was Davey being a great physio. I think this disproves that

Indeed, Chambta, one of our number - who would be a familiar face to many - was sufficiently aggrieved to leave his seat halfway up the stand to go to the touchline to remonstrate with the stewards. They looked to be struggling with the Deb'n accent but eventually the message got through.
Anyway, I'm sure people will agree with me in saying we've enjoyed your contributions this week. Please stick around.

It is not my yardstick either. But it is Ling's. He is the one that has said the target his promotion. I think he's living on cloud cuckoo land Lingy is a football manager. They tend to speak this type of langauge and are almost expected to do so. I don't really think it amounts to much. In fact I'm okay with managers who say "I believe we're good enough to win promotion. That's what we're aiming for". I'm rather sceptical of those who say "We will win promotion. We're the best team in the league. I guarantee it. Anything less is failure". My point isn't about how good Davey may or may not be. It's about the idea that we can afford to have a small squad because we won't have injuries because he's a good physio, which is clearly bunk. Recovery times may be faster but good physios cannot stop injuries occurring in the first place I think there's quite a difference between these two statements: - " We're going with a smaller squad than normal because we've an excellent physio."- "With a small squad, such as ours, it's helpful to have an extremely competent physio."I'm not really sure who has been justifiying having a small squad because of the physio. Surely not the club? However, I can see that the wording of Tim Herbert's press releases - which, because he's a decent press officer, will probably include some embellishment - may "big up" Damien Davey and give an impression of over-reliance. But that's a long way from saying that, for example, a physio is worth a player or two.

It's not just the club, I mean. It has been intimated during discussions on here that we'll be OK because of Davey
My feeling since before the season started has been that there is an air of complacency around the club. I hope I'm wrong but it's got to the point where people are expecting success and perhaps assuming we'll get it

I’d hate to be complacent about that and get caught out!

In fairness, you're one of the more realistic Torquay fans I've encountered. There are others who are expecting more - even last year you could see this when we had our run of defeats around this time of year, before we established ourselves as contenders
My expectation from the beginning has been the 3rd quarter of the table and I'm sticking with that. I think some fans would be disappointed with that. I hope Ling doesn't end up doomed by the "overachievement" of his first year

I hope Ling doesn't end up doomed by the "overachievement" of his first year That's a fair point. When we were discussing Eric Webber I suggested that three successive 15th place finishes would have been more acceptable in the past than now. That's actually exactly what I considered to be a fair return - over three years - when Martin Ling was appointed. That's because we're Torquay United. Not Plymouth Argyle or Bristol Rovers. Not even Chesterfield. At the moment Lingy's ahead of that. A 15th place this season would probably be accepted by a majority of supporters. 15th in 2013/2014 could make the majority unhappy. And, by that time, last season's 5th place would be forgotten and increasingly unlikely to "buy" him a fourth season in the affections of many. But that's the supporters, not the board. They may see it differently. Not that we're at that point or I'm expecting such an outcome. I'm speaking hypothetically.

I think he's living on cloud cuckoo land Sorry, but I have to ask - what is wrong with a target of promotion? I would have thought all teams should have a target of promotion when they start the season. The reality of that target might be quickly revised, and indeed Barnet already might be resetting their target to survival. Of course, it does depend on how a manager deals with falling short of the target; but I also don't think you will attract a better quality of player if you tell them that you are targeting 3rd from bottom on goal difference rather than targeting promotion. We made it to the play offs last season, aiming for less than that would have a direct effect on the motivation of the players, not to mention the fans. Yes, with a sack-load of injuries Ling privately might be targeting something else now, but I doubt it. I think we should be targeting promotion and I still think we can get promotion. I won't be surprised if we don't get promoted, or if we fail even to trouble the play-off race but I still hope that we do get to the play offs at least. I don't understand why you think its impossible (my interpretation of your "cloud cuckoo land") for us to get promoted. Four teams will go up, exactly why will we definitely not be one of those four?

did i see something about a kilt wearing fan blowing a whistle at the game today, wheres it gone? commentary mention whistle blowing during the game, they reckoned we were through on goal on one occasion when the phantom raspberry blower let rip Scottish Gull (on the back of his shirt), wearing a kilt, blew a whistle three times (ie like the ref blowing full time) very close to the end as we were in possession and on the attack. We weren't through on goal, but we were looking as if we weren't going to be far away from the pen box. As it was, play was stopped with the ball in the centre circle. I couldn't work out which was the biggest sign of idiocy: the blowing of the whistle or him grinning from ear-to-ear and acknowledging his responsibility in the face of some fierce abuse from the rest of the away contingent. It did take a particularly long time for the stewards to act, and I'm sure they only did so because of the demands of the Gulls fans. As it was, he made it to the station before I did as he was standing outside it when I got there, so they must have just kicked him out of the ground.

He's apologised on his Twit account: twitter.com/DominicFalconerand also on another Torquay fans forum. He does say that " As reports suggest that I was thrown out these are completely wrong I was advised to leave for my own safety, advice that I promptly took." Well, he was escorted out of the away section and then from the stadium by a steward, so what is the difference between that and being thrown out of the ground?

Of course, it does depend on how a manager deals with falling short of the target; but I also don't think you will attract a better quality of player if you tell them that you are targeting 3rd from bottom on goal difference rather than targeting promotion. I suppose it's our prerogative as supporters to either buy what the manager is saying or dismiss it as complete cobblers. Heaven knows what I'd be like as a footballer: "you're joking, Gaffer! Promotion? We'll finish no higher than 16th." But you're right. Within football, you have to have that sort of mentality. Name of the game. Talking promotion may be bollocks but it's barely feasible to talk anything else. Genuinely feeling and believing in the possibility is all part of the equation I would imagine. We know four teams go up. Twenty don't. But often one of the four that does - maybe even two - is something of a surprise packet, and possibly, not even a particularly brilliant team. Strange things happen in deciding who goes up and, ultimately, perhaps there's fifteen clubs each season with a chance of succeeding.

It's a shame that there is some brain-dead day tripper come along and drop a big steaming turd like that to the detriment of our on-pitch performances.
People like this should really look at themselves and ask 'what do I do for the club?' and wonder whether their presence at our matches is of any benefit to the players. I'm sure they could do without this sort of 'support'......

Sorry, but I have to ask - what is wrong with a target of promotion? I would have thought all teams should have a target of promotion when they start the season I would've said teams have two targets at the start of the season - a realistic one and an ideal one. Obviously the latter will always be promotion at our level. But it seems that the realistic one for us is also promotion - or at least was at the start of the season, although there has been no acknowledgement that that has changed I don't understand why you think its impossible (my interpretation of your "cloud cuckoo land") for us to get promoted. Four teams will go up, exactly why will we definitely not be one of those four? Because we aren't good enough. There are clearly three or four sides, perhaps a couple more, a cut above in this division. We're nowhere near them Gillingham should win the league comfortable. Vale look good as well. Then there's a group of about three or four teams competing - Fleetwood, Exeter, Bradford. Rotherham will get themselves sorted eventually and will certainly be up there. Ditto Southend - Assombalonga looks a proper player. Not sure Accrington will sustain it but they look good too. Northampton, Cheltenham and Burton look difficult to beat and I suspect at least one of those may end strongly. We've not beaten any of these teams yet, and I can't see it on current form - and if we don't win matches, we'll finish nowhere near the top
