Southend arrive at Plainmoor on Saturday on a 7-match unbeaten run in competitive fixtures, including 4 wins in the last 5 league games (3 of which have come away from home). This impressive form has seen Phil Brown's side rise to 3rd in the table, a point behind leaders Oxford in a very congested promotion race
They have great strength in depth in attack and goals from all over the park. Kevan Hurst has scored 5 goals in those 7 unbeaten fixtures, with Anthony Straker, Barry Corr and Will Atkinson amongst the others chipping in, and Wales international Freddy Eastwood a threat off the bench
Line-up vs Chesterfield:
Gk Daniel Bentley Def John White Def Luke Prosser Def Ben Coker Def Rob Kiernan Mid Anthony Straker Mid Marc Laird Mid Michael Timlin Mid Kevan Hurst Mid Conor Clifford For Barry Corr
Subs: Paul Smith (Gk), Mark Phillips (Def), Adam Thompson (Def), Jack Payne (Mid), Jack Edwards (Mid), Freddy Eastwood (For), Craig Reid (For)
Head-to-head:
Southend wins: 37 Torquay wins: 27 Draws: 28
Last match: Southend 1-1 Torquay (Eastwood 9; Labadie 45), League Two, March 2013
Last match at Plainmoor: Torquay 1-4 Southend (Tomlin 10, 46; Assombalonga 39, 45; Jarvis 52), League Two, November 2012
Last Torquay win: Southend 1-2 Torquay (Woods 3; Graham 11; Dudfield 17), Division Three, May 2004
Last Torquay win at Plainmoor: Torquay 3-0 Southend (Bedeau 45; Hockley 52; Graham 54), Division Three, November 2003
Until last season's fixture, Torquay were unbeaten in 7 fixtures against Southend at Plainmoor, with the previous defeating being back in December 1999

Hmm, trust us to come up against another team in form but we need a spark from somewhere and maybe our sabbatical has given Knill time to go back to the drawing board and integrate some of the new players more fully. I think Bodin will be back and will be looking forward to see which team will start.

I think Bodin will be back and will be looking forward to see which team will start. Stating the obvious, we really need something from this game. Looking at the table and this weekend's fixtures for the teams around us, things could look a whole lot worse if we don't put in a performance. As you say rjd, the squad have had 2 weeks to work on things which in theory should have helped and should, again in theory, see the players raring to go. For me Knill has to change things around. Although harsh on rice I would start with poke and reinstate Pearce in the middle and move o'connor to right back. First and foremost we have to be hard to beat and build from there. With a bit of luck maybe complacency will creep in to Southend and they'll have an off day! There is a decent piece on the Herald website about o'connor and how he wanted to stay at plainmoor. His attitude appears first class and that is the fight and determination required from everybody at the club right now.

Yep, we certainly need to scrap for every point. I see Stockley has picked up a calf strain which leaves us literally light up front, any suggestions? Maybe Bodin in the hole?

Nah, Benners and Maquis to start with Hawley on the bench? It may be if he's match fit, Bodin will start wide left letting Chapps move back to the right. Be suprised if the management come up with a sea-change in tactics, though a two week gap would have been the ideal time to work on it.

4-5-1 today. Marquis up top and Poke in goal. That's my reckoning. We've had two weeks to think of how we might stop our midfield getting overrun.

Midfield and the ease at which we are penetrated has been the main problem for me from the very start. Ironic because that was the problem when Knill arrived and brought in Labadie who changed our fortunes who made us so much more solid in that area. For the life of me I cannot understand why he has continually adopted the same old failing tactics week after week with the same pitiful outcome. It's what has gotten him and the club into this mess. Yep I would go with five in a more defensive midfield and try and play like the away team on the counter and also go with the best keeper at the club though no slight on Rice who has been excellent. Still can't see us winning this one with Southend on a role against the worst side in the division, low on confidence and grasping at straws for a tactic that can win games .

At considerable expense we've got rid of an expert who knew 4-5-1 inside out and back to front and replaced him with someone who wouldn't have a clue where to start with such a formation, not to mention bringing in a host of players to fit Knill style football and saying goodbye (permanently or temporarily) to the Howe's and Lathrope's who could play 4-5-1 with their eyes shut.
Having to look on at us putting out a Torquay side playing 4-5-1 so soon after the Summer would almost leave the Directors with as much egg on their collective faces as coming out and declaring that their Knillist Revolution is showing all the hallmarks of being an expensive failure.
A switch to 4-5-1 would leave a lot of us not knowing whether to laugh or cry, and would surely lead to the first ever 'You don't know what you're doing' chant before kick off.

Sure they have tried and failed to bring a more entertaining style of football to our club and I believe they are on a steep learning curve in football terms. Lings style, although reasonably effective was beginning to show signs of cracking before he himself lost the plot and lest face it some of the fare served up was nearly as bad as what we have seen this season and was quite honestly boring the pants off of me and many others including board members. We took a gamble and has blown up in our faces what we need to do now is admit we were wrong and find a solution quickly before it is too late and all the wheels fall off! Pride come before a fall and admitting you are wrong and need to change isn't a sign off weakness its a sign of strength.

petef As you say Pete it's all historical stuff now. I'm not so convinced that it was the Ling style that was showing signs of cracking as a realisation that a Eunan O'kane won't fall into our laps too often. Replacing Eunan, Roberston, Ellis, and getting another keeper of Olejnik's quality was going to be a tough task, especially for a club with our scarce resources and wasn't necessarily one that could be accomplished straight away. But yeah, if you address the system alone then even though it started the season wonderfully well (the first two home games against Cheltenham & Rochdale provided some of the best football I've seen at Plainmoor) by winter the football wasn't very good to watch. My personal belief is that Ling's shorter passing game requires a good surface and our pitch with all it's problems at the time was a rutted, swampy cabbage patch. I felt guilty on behalf of the club for us not being able to provide a surface for Ling's football to flourish. Despite lots of good players leaving and the awful pitch, I never had any serious worries about us finishing in the bottom half of the table under Lingy.
In some ways I'm glad Ling's not here now as he'd be getting more stick if we were anywhere in the bottom half than Knill gets for taking us to rock bottom. Let's hope that Knill will eventually provide us with more watchable football, after all the playing surface is in tip top condition this season. Three points today would be most welcome.

Another good performance to follow the Plymouth one, this time without a needless penalty costing us 2 points. The management obviously decided a change in tactics was needed in the 2 week break and we lined up 4-3-3 with Marquis in the middle and Chappers and Bodin either side. Pokey restored to the starting 11 though im not sure the result would have been different with Ricey in goal. We were the better team over the match, hit the bar twice, Bodin had 3 good shooting chances as well but tried to keep twisting and turning past defenders when a shot was the better option. Midfield battled well with Manse the pick of them. Southend obviously thought it better to play with the strong wind in the 1st half but didnt make it count with Pokey having to make just one save by my count. Once they were 1 down they pretty much resorted to hoofball with extra men pushing up but the defence had it easier with the ball holding up in the wind. A well deserved 3 points for the team today. edit: Have to say I was fearing the same sort of performance/result as last season so well happy tonight

Finally a change of shape with the first choice keeper as many of us have wanted for weeks and we put in our best and most professional performance of the season. At last we looked like a proper side, organised, compact across the middle and with the wide midfield men of Chapell and Bodin doing a proper covering defensive job and offering as much as they could as an attacking threat. Mozika was the free man in the center to push on and support Marquis who really impressed me in his role as collector of high balls and lone central front man. Southend hardly had a clear shot at goal for most of the afternoon as we finally got our priorities right with some superb defending from the "front" to the very impressive central back line. Tonge was caught out on a few occasions and doesn't look comfortable when in possession and for me was the only negative of the afternoon though he did keep at it. It was also great too see Bodin back o the pitch and despite his usual frustrating bals up in front of goal he is still a threat the opposition have to deal with and he also worked hard in the wide defensive areas. Poke was assured with great hands on a couple of Southend efforts and one fantastic save from a driven shot at the start of the second period that looked a goal all the way until he got a hand on it. Our goal resulted i us pressing their back line in the windy conditions with Mozika winning a crucial header Bodin laying off to Marquis who hit the sweetest of cross shots to beat the outstretched arms of the keeper. A top class finish by any standards from a player with the quality we desperately need on a more permanent basis. shortly after we could smell blood and should have gone two up only to see shots scrambled away hit the post or desperately saved by the away keeper. with plenty of time left for Southend to get back into it Brown used all his subs in what fortunately turned out to be a vane effort as we competed for every ball for the entire ninety plus added. The break has done us good by the looks of it and this result and performance will have lifted the gloom. Surely we can build on this and clamber our way out of the relegation quick sand and hopefully we will see Knill motivating us to do the same in each of the remaining matches as today I believe the players saved his bacon.

Three points against a side pushing for promotion will be a great boost to the players confidence, as well as helping shift some tickets for the Christmas games. Pete highlights that it's good to see Billy Bodin back, and while acknowledging there are be frustrating aspects to his performance at times, the recent weeks without him underlined how much of our creative attacking moves can stem from him.
A Saturday evening reflecting on a win, plus a clean sheet as well. Something we'd all like to get used to.
