So thats it then..........I can cancel setanta (after the 13:00hrs re-run on today), not bother with the Non League Paper on a Sunday, and stop worrying just how strong Luton are going to be next season. For a season at least, our foray into Non league oblivion is over.
Well done to Bucks and the team.......and most of all well done to the Board. The players produced a very accomplished performance on the day......and scored two cracking goals. Once we had settled after 15 mins they never really toubled us. In such an evenly matched game the first goal was going to define the match and Hargreaves popped up with a corker. For me, he has to be offered something next year. He may not have the legs for every game, but he has popped up with three crucial goals in the last month. From reading his blog, he just strikes me as the kind of guy that you want at your club in some role or other. I'd be sad to see him go.
The journey to Wembley was strange - just the odd Gull quietly making there way amongst loads of Cambridge fans - maybe it was our lack of numbers or natural pessimism, but the Cambridge fans really did appear super confident - all they had to do was show up. Fortunately a few of their players didn't.
It sure does feel great to be back in the league - never have trips to Grimsby Rochdale and Darlo seemed so appealing. When are the fixtures out? Others have stated how much they have enjoyed the last two years and in some respects I can see why - however, the ticket fiasco last week demonstrated that the BSP is not a great place to be. Some great away trips and friendly ppeople, but incompetant officials both on and off the pitch.
I wondered whether people would just enjoy the moment or seek to round on anyone who ever said anything critical of Buckle. A few very predictable comments. I know I am viewed as anti Buckle - fair enough. I think there is a difference between those who raise concerns on this site to those who post on the Herald. My opinion on Bucks has not changed too much - the club has done fantastically well to get up from its knees in the last two years. I just remain unconvinced as to how much of this is down to PB. But I'm just going to enjoy the promotion feelng for now...........the Buckle debate is one for a boring summers day for me.
Has anyone noticed how Oxford seem to be building a strong side for next year. They will be there or there abouts..........sorry force of habit! Not our problem anymore! Not wishing to wish misery on any genuine football fan, but are there any league two clubs hovering around administration? It would be ever so nice to get a ten point gap between us and the bottom, by the time pre-season starts

It would be ever so nice to get a ten point gap between us and the bottom, by the time pre-season starts I'm glad I can stop worrying about the likes of how strong the BSP is going to be next year with Stevanage and Oxford seeming to sign decent acquisitions already. You would think that both Wrexham and Mansfield would improve on this years efforts and then you throw in Luton and AFC Wimbledon and I have to say that I've very glad that we've managed to get into the Football League again so quickly. After watching the two sides yesterday it reminded me a little of last years semi final against Exeter. At the time we seemed to be the more one dimensional out of the two sides and yesterday we looked like a more polished outfit. We scored two excellent goals at precisely the right times yesterday as they enjoyed a decent bit of pressure before we scored both goals. After we scored we played like we did at the Abbey Stadium earlier in the year where we looked organised, keep our shape nicely and then hit them on the break with pace and creativity. I have to feel for Cambridge fans a little. They turned up in huge numbers and made a lot of noise. As Enzo says some of their players didn't. A work colleague was telling me that Cambridge were on telly on Friday and their players we all going on about the party they'd planned in London after the game. As for your anti Buckle posts Enzo. I think yours have more rationale behind them than some of the other anti Buckle posters who seem to be either very bitter human beings or complete knobheads. I have the pleasure of having one of these blokes sitting behind me yesterday who until the second goal was slating Buckle, Mansell, Robertson (after he'd cracked the 25 yard effort just past the post), then Todd got it in the neck and then he saved most of it for Carlisle. After the 2nd goal went in I turned around to him and told him he could stop moaning. A strange individual. It's almost like he would've been happy if we'd lost. I have some small doubts over Buckle's ability but he's only in his second year of management and I've seen a huge improvement from last year. We've had a much improved record against the better clubs in the league and that suggests he's improved his tactical nous. On a different note I'm been amazed by the commitment shown by Chris Hargreaves in the last ten games. He's shown himself to be a professional footballer of the highest order. I would love to see him carry on in a torquay shirt but equally I would like to see him have some quality of life when he quits the game. From reading his blog it seems that he's been on ibuprofen and painkillers all season. If he does decide to retire then he's bowed out in the most fantastic player. A quality player and quality bloke.

A quality player and quality bloke. Stuart, Chris - agree pretty much with all the sentiments you've described above. We suggested in the pub after the game that the Capital Gulls become more of an entity once again - starting with a few beers in town on the day that the [glow=red,2,300] Football League [/glow]fixtures come out (how good it sounds to be looking out for them once again). I presume you will both be on for that? I just watched the game in full on Setanta this afternoon; we could have had 2 penalties (one on Sills when their keeper took an easy catch, when Tim picked up his injury; one on Todd when he was bearing in on goal on the edge of the 6 yard box). That said, they had a stonewaller in the last seconds of extra time, when Robertson barged Rendell. It would have been too little, too late anyway. What got me about the whole commentary - and in particular that f*ckwit Parker - was how negative and disrespectful they seemed to be towards our team until Sills got the second, at which point they started to backtrack rather a lot. That is the other thing I won't miss from the last 2 years - the inarticulate and badly-observed comments that Parker makes. Shame really, because I think that Setanta has done so much good to bring the BSP to a potentially wider audience. Chris, we must go for the double next year - a chance to put the scarves on the Morecambe & Wise statues up in Morecambe. So much to look forward to, once again. Onwards and upwards!

I have to agree with you views on Paul Parker. I thought Leroy completely outshone him recently. The usual formula is to slate us the entire game and then when we score say "Thats Torquay, thats what they do" as if he's on our side after all.
Am I right in saying that he caused the deflection on Andrea's Brehme's free kick in Turin in 1990? The shot that looped over Peter Shiltons head?

In a word Chris - YES!
Obviously Parker has come across as slow and bumbling throughout his career (the KNOB)!!
I won't shed a tear if I never hear him commentate again.

A superb performance by everyone involved with Torquay United, both on the field & off & a more convincing win than I dared hope for. For all their possession I don't think Cambridge created more than one really clear cut chance & Poke dealt with it without too much difficulty.
We would have taken any goals however scrappy but the two we scored were very well taken & memorable..I know it's always dangerous to start counting your chickens too soon but I'm sure I wasn't the only one who thought promotion was ours once Sills powerful header hit the back of the net.
A great day for everyone & lots of happy memories for us all.

so that was that then....................What a day.
we started at 0921 the train was pretty much on time and after a few beers on train with aussie we met a friend from macc at paddington.
On up to weatherspoons on wembley high street and then the Green Man (strange how with so many less fans than last year it was much busier?) Met merse and many others there and then wandered with many others to wembley with the sounds of yellow army following along.
I wont comment on the game , Usually this is because I don't understand football really and leave the technical stuff to others but this time it was because I missed most of the game doing anything other than watch it! I sat on the loo, wandered around the concourse and stood at the bar. Daft really i know but it was unbearable. I thought that when the goal went in we would just be hitting a tiger with a big stick!
And so onto the result.................. I don't mind admitting that I cried, not just a few tears but real sobs of joy, It was the best feeling ever and if I could bottle that feeling I would be a rich man (would any other men on here be willing to admit to having damp eyes???)
Louie and I hugged each other and the big screen found us, after that we floated all the way home and finished the day in first class all the way back to Newton (no one asked!)
After the game I smoked a huge cigar (my unlucky cigar from last year!) and on thurs at the parade I will open the bottle of champagne I won in the raffle at the legends night .
So So very happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apparantley Rhianan and me were on the big screen for a few seconds while we had a cuddle, about three minutes after the full time whistle! I`m getting a copy of the game on HHD so will attempt to chop it up and put the bits on here of who I recognise as being Forum members.

I confess I was a little anti Wembley and not too excited prior to Sunday. I had hoped our "non league" adventure would have yielded an honour and didn`t think a play off final would feel the same. But I must admit I found the wembley experience great and when Greavsie lifted the cup the eyes filled up. Was impressed with the stadium, it didn`t feel like we were rattling around inside it, somehow felt quite compact and the acoustics & facilities were good. Must thank Romford Kev for dragging us from the jaws of a vocal bunch on the tube. Hope the leather seat and cucumber sandwiches were nice Was surprised and disapointed with Cambs. Apart from 10-15 at the start of each half they seemed clueless. It was odd but when we started to come into the game after 15 mins I knew we would score. The second half seemed to fly by but what puzzled me most was why the big screens kept showing Al Murray ;D We met quite a few Cambs fans on the day and found most to be friendly. There were some idiots though as I said earlier and on the way home. fortunately the transport police were on the tube. Have to say thats the one thing I find with the Gulls when you look around you don`t see idiots looking for trouble or mouthing off. Got home physically and emotionally drained. Went to work today minus a voice. Happy days "United are back"..."United are back".hello" buster
