Will put the matchday thread up nice and early as you may have some thoughts on the game you will want to post.
Well unlike last year we have got to the play-off final and I think we all know just how important this game is, winning it will restore our league status that we should never have lost.
I think we will all know the possible starting line up and the only question for me is will Bucks stick with Poke?
I firmly believe we will win the game and join Burton in league two.

Great thread to see Dave - the best yet  Can't believe that after they started to watch the gulls in September 2007, that this will be the second Wembley trip for my children!  (What will I say to them next year  ) After both teams losing 1 - 0 at Wembley last year, one of these ex-league team is about to lose their ex status! It is going to be pretty devastating for the other team but that's the way the cookie crumbles. |

Why is the kick off at 4pm on a Sunday?
Go only knows it will be bad enough getting home via a train replacement bus service because of maintenance work anyway.But to start heading out at 7pm on a Sunday is just twisting the knife.
What is wrong with 3pm on a Saturday?

The title of this thread is great to see. There has been so much hard work put in by Buckle and the squad to get to this position. Hargreaves, particularly over the last month has been immense and led by example. We have progressed again this year and just one game now stands between us and promotion.
Buckle is right. It is not our rightful place. We have to earn that right. And we have seen various statistics over the season which could lead an outsider to conclude we were punching above our weight. None of that matters now. We are at Wembley. The home of football. Interestingly, I understand that Liverpool have not yet been to the new Wembley. Is that right? Anyway, we now have that golden chance. A big game. Barnet in reverse, if you will.
I really don't think there will be any tinkering. Benyon will be in for Sturrock as a straight swap. For what it's worth, I was reasonably happy with his performance against Histon. I saw strength, I saw chasing it down the channels and I saw coming in passing back to re-start an attack of our own, and yes, I also saw him outmuscled at times. He was not alone in that regard either. If Buckle thinks he is "too small" for Cambridge, then he does have the option of Green, who I would prefer to Rhino, but I can't see it.
It will be a close affair and we won't do it the easy way, because we never do. Hargreaves referred to the fans as the 12th and 13th man on Sunday and I'm sure we'll be doing our level best to lift the lads throughout the game. These players clearly respond to that as has been seen by our displays away from home this season. Something which many have commented on throughout the season as well.
So will we win? Of course. It's our time. It was written. And Sam is certain. I can't see beyond a Todd winner either from the spot or in normal time. I know, I know. But I can't help it.

...Lovely, back to football  The thought of this game is mind blowing......it may very well shape the future of our club for the next decade or so. I like the fact that Cambridge are slight favorites, just adds a little to the pressure that they will no doubt be feeling after losing in last years final.....the fact that they failed to even score against us in the 2 league games this season is another slight advantage for us. No doubt that Bucks will try and treat this one (rightly) as just another game, no suits, no "enjoying the day"......tracksuits off and down to business! As for the team, i disagree that it will pick itself. The goalie is a toss up, I expect he'll go for Poke though, the back four will be the usual. Midfield.....Carlisle, Greavsie and Wroe are obvious. Stevens could possibly make way for Carayol, he might well save Muzzy for the last half an hour though. Up front is the dilemma, Taking that Sturrock is out....i would go with Sills and Green. Some might argue that it is harsh on Benyon, who has been much better this season but Wembley is different. Horses for courses in my book and the one thing that we need against a big Camb defence is PACE.....their will be acres of space in behind them and we need people that can exploit that. Green fits the bill, is much quicker over distance than Benyon and runs the channels better.......ok he hasnt played much of late but he will be fresh and up for it. Who looked the matchwinner in the big fa cup games earlier this season? Benyon, off the bench always looks more threatening.....and it would certainly suprise Camb who have 2 weeks to do their homework on us. |

Cracking post Rob. I hope that stat about Liverpool is true. Off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure it is. If Bevan - or "The Bevanator" as I've hilariously* seen in some matchday programmes recently - is fit, it's going to be a hell of a choice for Mr Buckle. My heart says Bevan got us into the players so he plays. I wouldn't be surprised if Bucks is secretly hoping Bevan isn't fit in time! This would be my team: Bevan (Poke if SB is unfit)
Mansell - Todd - Robertson - Nicholson
Carlisle - Hargreaves - Wroe - Stevens
Benyon - Sills With Hodges, Carayol and Green all featuring from the bench at some point. Poke/Rice and Ellis to fill the other substitute spots depending on Bevan's fitness. * Hilarious in the sense that it's so bad it's good! |

I`ve seen him at training in the gym with his shirt off, he`s huge and ripped! Sorry girls didn`t mean to get you exited but the man is massive! And not like that by the way, not that anyone could have seen anyway, shorts were being worn! For all I know he could be that massive but thats for the girls to discover, I don`t won`t to know! |

I think it's a great shame that Sturrock is unable to play. I would have liked to see him exploit the room at Wembley, with Benyon coming on as an "impact" player in the final 25/20 minutes. I feel sure that Bucks will go for the same line-up as at Histon, with Benyon starting instead of the injured Sturrock.
I hope that Matt Green is on the bench to fulfil the "Benyon impact" role. Subs I can see as Bevan, Ellis, Green, Carayol & Hodges.
Green & Carayol are both potential match-winners, Ellis is a good defender at this level who has not let us down in any of his appearances. Hodges has such a good pedigree he's got to be on the bench. Remember he was a winger at Argyle, and can cover a number of roles. And what a sub keeper we have in Bevan! Very unlucky to get an injury at a crucial time of the season.
The only negative I can think of is please! No Christie. Apart from anything else, how can he run in those shorts with the crutch down by his knees?

Having young children with a normal bed time of 7:30p.m. due at school first thing on Monday morning, it certainly has involved some careful logistical planning to get them to see this match. I wouldn't be surprised if the match time has put some families off, particularly those occasional / day tripper supporter types.  In respect of the line up, suppose it is logical to have the same line up as Histon but with Benyon starting and a toss up between Poke and Bevan although almost expecting the unexpected and wouldn't be surprised if there was a surprise. Will take any sort of win (or winning draw ;D) and wouldn't it be fantastic to celebrate the first anniversary of this forum with a promotion thread. I know most members will have seen the match in one form or the other but looking forward to the match reports as it sometimes comes down to a matter of perspective.  Finally, reading the previous Cambridge match thread the opening line of the excellent Swangull struck a chord: "A decent match by two strong teams who showed they they will be both challenging for promotion this season." |

Thanks for those kind remarks, Rjdgull. I'm just wondering where this match ranks in the grand scheme of things comparing it to other important matches in Torquay United's history ? The Crewe and Barnet great escapes, the promotion at Southend are obvious other examples that have defined Torquay's destiny. Perhaps Jon would be best to give his opinion on this point.
This match is at least as important as them I would say. I feel if we got promotion this season, now with the excellent consortium, we could gain real momentum. It might be pushing it to do an Exeter, but I think we would give a good account of ourselves in league 2. Lose and next season's BSP looks even more difficult and we could be there for a long time.
Sadly it looks unlikely I will be at Wembley next week. This might be a good omen. I have missed other biggies like Southend and Barnet when we were successful. Our Wembley record isn't great to date and I've seen them all so far.
Saying that, I've feel I've done my bit for the club in recent weeks by buying my first ever season ticket, and having my son's 10th birthday party at TUFC. My finances are therefore a little tight. I just hope more people will do their bit for the club in the Torbay area, however small. It's the least the club deserves.
