The match ended up an incredible 11-5 to Torquay Looking back, the 11-5 score wasn't quite as extraordinary as you might think as it came in the middle of an incredible goalfest at Plainmoor. The previous Saturday, the first team lost 4-7 at home to Watford and on the following Saturday the reserves lost 4-5 at home to Bristol Rovers reserves. 36 goals in three matches in a week! Away from home, the defence was equally leaky but the attack less lethal. The reserves lost 7-0 at Folkestone on the first Saturday and 5-0 at Newport reserves on the Wednesday. The first team lost 5-1 at Brighton on the second Saturday!

just received some bad news about the shield from my dad this morning. Apparently the shield was buried in Pitsmoor, Sheffield and Walter ( Alberts Brother ) did go back to retrieve the shield but it had dissapeared. I will see if anyone who reads the local Star Newspaper here has any knowledge of it's where abouts.

Great to see Stefano and my old Newton Spurs boss Bill Anderson in that line up of vets from the United Public House do, and beside Andy; Bill Coley who's son Keith was a veteran and very good former Torquay United player too in our day. Wonderful stuff Derek, thanks for bringing it to us!

Well that sure was hard work Derek due to the damage on a few players faces ;D my restored effort is not 100% historically accurate as I had to nick one players eyes to give to a team mate and another player had to be nice and share his nose. Original Restored effort

That is Bert Head on the left. Not sure who the guy in the middle is. Can anyone pinpoint the location?

Interesting Luton v Arsenal programme. There is a future Torquay manager in the Arsenal team - one of many internationals in the Arsenal line-up.
Do you have a date for the game Derek? I assume it was in the 1929-30 season. Was it a friendly or what?

[/quote] According to Kelly’s a tobacconist called Frank Wakefield was still trading at 123 St Marychurch Road in 1965, now the premises of DS Safety. 123 is next to the shop on the corner of St Paul’s Road and St Marychurch Road. By that reckoning the picture was taken from (what now is) the entrance to Waitrose looking towards St Paul’s Road as it leads away from the Union. Behind the bush is the corner shop – once a co-op – which is now Headquarters hairdressers’.

Ray Bowden - a Westcountryman in that Arsenal side alongside Eddie Hapgood and Cliff Bastin - didn't sign for Arsenal until 1933. I'm guessing it's the 3rd round FA Cup tie of 1933-34. Perhaps Albert was back in Luton visiting old friends? We didn't have a game on Saturday 13 January 1934 but we did play Luton the previous week. Was Albert promised a ticket that afternoon?

Will have that info for you this week jon, I did have the rest of the programs that were in plastic folders but were so fragile that I did not want to take them out for scanning.

Dave That would be fantastic Dave, thanks, I am still waiting for a reply from anyone in Sheffield regards the Shield, it went into the local Star as an appeal for information. I will not hold my breath for anything but I am optimistic...
