All over and our first loss of the season.
Seems like the game was lost in the first half when we didn't play well at all. The second half we sounded like we upped our game, changing our formation and making a change in personnel.
So the inevitable loss has finally come about - still only one point off the top. It will be interesting to see how we bounce back from this.

Formation change should have been made much sooner but 12 points from the first 5 games - that will do me. I await the match reports with baited breath Shame we can't have an 'I'm Serious' icon.

Sounds like their keeper made a great save from Gritton in the last minute. The team have covered a hell of alot of miles for these last 3 away games, great start to the season but obviously not at the races today for most of the match.

no side likes you putting pressure on them, thats the annoying part, they would of caved in eventually, results just dont happen, you have to work at it,something we didnt do for 70 minutes, the folks that went to the game analysis would be appreciated later, still another monkey of our shoulder gone

Sounds like their keeper made a great save from Gritton in the last minute. The team have covered a hell of alot of miles for these last 3 away games, great start to the season but obviously not at the races today for most of the match. I worked it out in the week to be at least 1250 miles this week. End of a great run. Well done lads, 12 games unbeaten, 5 successive away wins and one goal against in 12 league games. Everyone connected with the club should be proud of that achievement. In a way, this defeat should reduce the pressure and spotlight on us. Just a matter of breaking the tightest defense in the league next week now as Accy have conceded only one in 5 league games!! Makes our defense look like a sieve in comparison.

I have often seen a game of two halves, well this one was a game of one hour and one half-hour, and in the end probably the better team took the three points.
Sadly, the Gulls seemed to find the start of a third away game in seven days a little bit too much for them over the first hour, but by the end it was Southend clinging on for dear life, and based on the last 30 minutes grateful for their result.
Southend absolutely dominated the opening 45 minutes, albeit not really creating all that many chances, two expertly taken goals apart. The first, which I would like to see again on TV, looked to be a beautiful half-volley effort that flew into the top corner of Bevan's net, leaving even the giantest of goalies with no chance at making a save, coming as it did from a corner cleared to the edge of the box with him heading in the wrong direction.
The Shrimpers had all the quality in midfield, with Anthony Grant and Josh Simpson having their way with Wroe and Mansell who were hugely ineffective, although they were not the only ones. Carlisle and Stevens barely touched the ball, and lost it when they did, and the service to Zebroski and Benyon was awful - Zebs did his best to make the best of it, Benyon not so much (and that is being kind - he had a shocker).
Defensively we were fine, although the second goal saw Simpson fire home from (I think) outside the box when he was given far too much time on the ball. Bevan seemed likely to get across and tip it wide but it was a sliced effort that just avoided his outstretched fingers.
Little happened at the Torquay end, apart from a moment of panic in the Southend defence that led to Ellis volleying off the corner of post and bar. Nothing stuck with Benyon and it was just one of those days for him - I was surprised he came out for the second half and more surprised it took so long to get him off for Kee.
Gritton entered the fray at the break and made a difference as he is something Zebs is not - a target man. He was often fouled, although got nothing from the referee, in fact the opposite - he seemed to called up for small incidents never worthy of a free kick.
A change in formation to 3-4-3 really changed things around for the last 30 minutes with Nicholson, easily Torquay's man of the match, playing wide on the left and Carlisle on the right with three centre backs and three up front.
This seemed to panic the Southend defence and Nicholson hit the bar with a deflected effort, Wroe dragged wide when he should have hit the target and Kee mis-directed a header when he was free for an effort on goal.
We pulled one back 12 minutes from time when Gritton's shot hit the post and rebounded for Zebroski to prod home, but despite plenty of pressure and balls lumped into the box, nothing would fall right in the closing minutes and defeat was tasted for the first time in the league this season, the closest chance coming when Morris made an excellent save to turn a Zebroski header around the post. Who knows what would have happened had we played 10 more minutes, but the 100 minute game has yet to be invented!
Nothing really for the team to complain about, apart from the ludicrous incident at the end when a cameraman (Southend I assume) kicked the ball into the empty stand to waste some time, provoking a reaction from Robertson and most notably Branston. The cameraman was rightly told it might be better for him not to walk past the Torquay fans, some of the more amoebic ones calling for him to be publicly flogged with their one combined brain cell, so instead the stewards sent him across the pitch right into the path of Hurricane Guy - the fool is lucky still to be alive and Pickler is lucky that he didn't lamp him!
Mor(e) on the stewards - just why they took umbrage with the Torquay fans standing through the game, that I can understand, as it is part of the ground regulations, but that also applies to the Southend fans as well - if it's good for them to stand then it's good for us, and they should be more welcoming of the money coming into their crumbling stadium, rather than telling people to sit.
All in all, a very average performance, the result was fair based on the whole of the 90 minutes, but there was enough from the final 30 minutes to suggest it might just be a blip rather than the start of a bad run. Southend are not a bad side by any means, and as they continue to gel, they will improve further. Remember most of these players are new to them, just like both of our sides in the Conference days - I'd tab them for the play-offs at least although their fitness was running out by the end of play and we were ripping through them.
No marks out of 10 - not re-visiting last week's combat zone!
Nice to see Rob (Ospelgull) and the rest of the first game of the season Jonahs - we'll probably not be welcomed again this season after watching the first defeat of the league campaign!

I think we all must be in mourning tonight at the loss of our 100% record and top spot. Very quiet on here. Getting beaten after a great run like weve had comes as a bit of a shock but it has been a tough week of traveling and away fixtures that would test any squad. Personally I thought that Bucks would have freshened things up a bit today but I guess thats his call and if it had gone wrong with a few fresh faces in place he would have been lambasted by a few no doubt. Im not to down beat but its important to try and get some fresh legs and impetus going once again and try and stay at he sharp end of the division for as long as we can, consistency is everything if you want success. A free week and a home game next week is a good basis to recover and get the appetite back.

Ok, home safe and a bit tipsy after drinking precisely 50% of my 4 cans of choice due to the delayed C2C train.
Firstly, the good news. We were poor, but we showed some real fight in the last 15.
Also, I got to meet longeatongull - courtesy of his Gorbachov facial reconstruction and teddgull. Real pleasure gents and proof beyond doubt that for all the bickering, squabbling and nonsense that’s been on here lately, this forum brings more people together than it divides. I know it’s a very simplistic attitude, but we could all do with chilling out a bit.
Now the not so good news. We were awful first half. Amazingly, we managed to hit the bar through Mark Ellis, but generally we were bereft of ideas, second best in the tackle, but more importantly in my opinion, our first touch was dreadful. The wingers will be easy targets and they were both poor in the fist half – particularly Danny. I often wonder what differentiates teams at all levels and I think the common denominator is first touch and general ball control. The last game I got to see us live in was Aldershot away towards the end of last season and in the middle of our amazing run and we were pinging the ball around for fun. From reports from friends, we’ve been doing that this year as well. Sadly, we didn’t do that today.
Into the second half and still we couldn’t get to grips with the game. Respect to Sturrock, he’d done his homework (a testament to our league position maybe, not many people bother in-depth scouting of teams who are bottom of the league) and Southend never gave us a minute to play. They were sharp, keen in the tackle and their number 6 was as good as anyone I’ve seen at this level.
And then, a lifeline. After our goal, we were a different team. Or maybe, it was Southend – finally put under some pressure – who were the different team. We almost equalised immediately and then laid some kind of siege upon their goal, culminating in an outstanding save by their keeper from Gritton’s header.
Game over – fair result on reflection.
Only 2 things left to comment on and I don’t want to end on a sour note, so I’ll save the good bit till last.
So…..our ‘fans’………
During the first half, I had the complete and utter misfortune of sitting next to our ‘hardcore’ fans. When I say ‘hardcore’ of course, I refer to the PATHETIC, SHAMEFUL, EMBARRASSING excuse for a group who are clearly mentally disturbed and harbour some twisted belief that their ‘songs’ are clever and entertaining.
I have a friend who used to be a passionate TUFC fan who no longer goes to games because he says he’s too embarrassed to be associated with, and I quote him, not me, ‘retards’. It’s difficult not to agree with him.
Now, I can almost forgive the incessant string of pathetic inane drivel that they spout throughout the match, but what I just can’t believe is the treatment of John Solako, who was obviously there, doing his job, reporting for the media. During the game there was a chorus of ‘John Solako is a c*nt’ which left me completely perpleaxed, until the end of the game when some of our ‘supporters’ walked past the TV gantry and started hurling abuse at him again. Now I thought I must have been missing something until I realized that they were singling him out because he’s predicted Torquay might struggle this season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Truly unbelievable and shameful. They should all hang your heads in shame, but I fear they do not have the mental capacity to appreciate what fuc*ing morons they are.
And as a final point on this subject, to the guy who turned roud in the second half and called them embarrassing, I salute you sir. I wish I’d backed you now and started a commotion to get the dic*heads thrown out.
Aaaaaaaaaaaah. Rant over!!!
As promised, a high to finish on.
The prolonged round of applause that the team took from us at the end was clearly not based on today’s performance – it was based on the truly astonishing run we have been on finally coming to an end and an acknowledgement of the history and pride we have created for our club.
I can’t speak for everybody, but I’ve been sending e-mails, web links and league tables to my Premirsh*t supporting friends and they have been amazingly supportive and complimentary about our run. What our boys have done over the last few months is raised our profile, and probably our expectations, but more importantly restored a real sense of pride in our team. I thank each and every one of them for that and just hope that we can prove it wasn’t a flash in the pan and we can prolong it to some level over the course of a season.
Wow, this is the longest post I’ve ever made. Fel free to be bored by it!
Ratings (based on a complicated series of algorithms, utilising Pythagoras’ theorem and taking away the first number you thought of :
Bevs – 6 – Great save in first half, no chance with either goal, slightly flapped at second half cross. Nicho – 7 – Just a good player at this level Ellis – 6.5 - Love him, but not his best today Pickler – 7 – As Ellis, but extra half mark for scaring the sh1t out of the idiot cameraman (we’d have loved it if one of our cameramen had done that!) Robbo – 6 – OK Carlisle – 5 – First touch disappointing for such a good player – robbed too often. Wroe – 5.5 – Couldn’t get hold of the ball today and was overrun in midfield. Mans – 5 – See Wroe, but ever so slightly worse (I think we lost the game in midfield today) Stevens – 3 – Don’t want to be too harsh, but he really was awful today. Benyon – 4 - Need to tread very carefully here – I thought he was dreadful. Maybe not suited to formation, but even so………. Zebs – 7.5 – My MOM, just shading Nicho. Works his nuts off and has genuine quality at this level Candidate for POTY this season I think.
Subs
Gritts – not sure he is the man for a top 8 finish Billy – first look – seemed to make a genuine difference O’Kane – no time.
Jesus – can I go to bed now? I’ve drunk my other two beers!
